Tschaikovsky Tide Rolls Into the NYC Ballet
01/21/2013 23:18
Watching the New York City Ballet enclave twirl is a prodigious break from the city’s frenetic energy. Their ballerinas seamlessly mesh sculpted, graceful movements with incredible skill. Once again, they are dazzling us.
Since Jan. 15, the company has been touting Peter Ilyich Tschaikovsky with tsunami force. They are holding a four-week commemoration of the Russian composer, whose formative melodies have whisked many souls to musical heaven for more than a century. I envisage passionate pirouettes against sparkling stage backdrops.
The productions sound promising. The company’s artistic director and primary choreographer George Balanchine’s nine Tschaikovsky works are a masterful confluence. It includes Mozartiana, Balanchine’s first choreographed ballet in America. Other masterpieces include Swan Lake, and director Peter Martins’ premiere to the stylings of Tschaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Sleeping Beauty, a mesmeric staging of the winsome fairytale concludes the season in late February.
